It's another FIRST for Delray! 🥇🏆 Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in South Florida to enroll a patient in the PICASSO trial. The trial, which is in the critical third phase, is aimed at improving management for patients with tandem occlusions. This achievement is thanks to interventional neurologists Drs. Nils Mueller-Kronast and Dennys Reyes at Delray Medical Center, who are committed to improving stroke care through innovative research. The enrollment of the first South Florida patient at Delray Medical Center is a critical step forward for the region's involvement in this important study. The findings from the PICASSO Trial have the potential to significantly impact how stroke patients with tandem occlusions are treated, providing clearer guidance for physicians and better outcomes for patients. Tandem occlusions occur when a stroke in the brain is accompanied by a narrowing or blockage in the neck artery, limiting blood flow to critical areas. The PICASSO Trial, which has been enrolling patients across the country, is designed to determine the most effective way to treat this condition. The trial compares two distinct treatment approaches: stenting the artery to keep it open or performing angioplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that uses a balloon to restore blood flow. ADVANCING CARDIAC CARE: Baptist Health is the first health system in the state to have performed the first commercial Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement procedure, undertaken by the expert team of cardiologists Ruby Satpathy, MD, Siddharth Wayangankar, MD, and Alejandro Peña, MD. In doing so, Baptist Health became the only heart program in Florida with access to both revolutionary technologies – Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Repair and Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement. In addition to treating other valves like aortic and mitral valves, the introduction of this procedure provides more options for patients with tricuspid valve disease who for decades have had no surgical or minimally invasive treatment options. The two procedures, Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Repair and Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement, offer individualized approaches to address tricuspid regurgitation without the need for open heart surgery. Through the repair procedure, a catheter-guided device (clip) is placed in the tricuspid valve, helping it to close properly and preventing blood leakage. The replacement procedure involves placing a new valve within the faulty tricuspid valve to restore normal blood flow. Both methods are designed to significantly reduce symptoms and improve a patient’s quality of life, while significantly reducing recovery times and hospital stays compared with traditional open surgery. These procedures represent a remarkable achievement for the Structural Heart Program at Baptist Health. “Patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AFib) who undergo transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) may face a heightened risk of long-term mortality, according to new findings published in the American Journal of Cardiology.[1] However, this does not appear to be the case when patients present with preoperative paroxysmal AFib. The study’s authors focused on data from nearly 3,000 TAVR patients treated at a single high-volume medical center in the United States. A total of 38% of patients included in the analysis had with a history of AFib at the time of treatment. While approximately half of those patients presented with paroxysmal AFib—meaning it was spontaneous and could be controlled with treatment—the other half presented with persistent AFib that “failed to terminate within seven days.” After one year, AFib patients were associated with higher rates of all-cause mortality (9.0% vs. 6.1%) and hospital readmission (13.1% vs. 8.8%) than those with no history of AFib. AFib patients also had significantly lower Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) Scores. However, there were not significant differences in all-cause mortality, hospital readmission or KCCQ score between patients with persistent AFib and those with paroxysmal AFib after one year.”

📝 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐉𝐀𝐌: "𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐦" 10 years ago to this week (October 24, 2014), I was putting the finishing touches on my first ever analyst report at Chilmark Research. It was a deep-dive 100-pager profiling trends, pressures, and top vendors in the patient portal marketplace, with a focus on untethered Electornic Health Record portals with "cutting edge" features like mobile apps, integrated wearables, and of course, compliance with the second stage of CMS's meaningful use program requirements for data access and sharing. I spent a YEAR talking to companies, reading literature, reviewing websites, attending conferences, and jamming all the information I could into my brain, which spilled over into a word doc, spreadsheets, and powerpoints that became standard questionnaires for primary research, draft profiles, TAM and CAGR estimates, and dozens of insights gathered and shaped meticulously. I was 29 years old. I was lucky to be working for an industry leader who offered me a balance of experienced guidance and free reign to develop my own process, spend time in the weeds, and "lose myself" in the subject matter, emphasize editorial independence and patient centeredness as much as possible. Prior to this work, I'd spent a couple of years at The Livestrong Foundation, where I came to believe in my bones that advocacy could indeed be part of market research, if done the right way: With scrutiny, integrity, and patience. A decade later, with additional reports under my belt at Patchwise Labs (which, as a creative strategy firm, operates a little bit differently than a dedicated analyst firm, but I'll save that post for another day...) I'm reminding myself that in the market research game, SLOW > fast. ORIGINALITY > consensus. WHY > what. That leader, John Moore, passed away a few years back (Rest In Peace, John). The role of AI and new technology to aid cardiology “As cardiology starts to face staffing shortages and continued decreases in CMS payments, Biga believes technology advances need to be leveraged in cardiology to help improve outcomes, make workflows more efficient to do more with less, and to help cut costs.” “Many of the solutions that can help were displayed on the expo floor, including telehealth and real-time remote monitoring systems. "I think this area will experience an explosion in use," Biga said. Another major area that will likely see an explosion of use is artificial intelligence (AI). She said AI will begin playing a rapidly growing role in cardiology in the coming years to augment cardiologists and other clinical staff. And not just on the front lines of patient care, but also in the back offices where AI will play a growing role in IT systems, smoothing workflow, analytics, automated quality metrics capture and many other areas. "We must use AI to reduce administrative burdens and improve patient outcomes," Biga explained. “

🌟 A Shocking Reality Check on Obesity & Ozempic 🌍💊 Yesterday, we had an insightful lecture at Baptist Health South Florida as a part of Jose 'Pepe' Alvarez, MD annual lecture. Dr. Herbert Aronow's presentation on the current landscape of GLP-1 RAs was a true eye-opener. But what really stuck with me was the staggering price differences for Ozempic across the globe. I decided to do some digging into the data myself, and here's what I found: 📝 Countries with higher obesity rates seem to be paying a hefty premium for Ozempic. In the U.S., where obesity rates are the highest, we're shelling out a whopping $936 a month – almost 10x more than countries like the U.K. Why? It all boils down to supply and demand. Higher demand = higher prices. But there's hope on the horizon! The patent for Ozempic expires in 2031. However, until then, we could be stuck with these sky-high prices unless governments step in. The Future of GLP-1 Agonists 📈 The global market for these medications is expected to explode, reaching a staggering USD 133.35 billion by 2030!
